St Helen and St Katharine
A day school for girls in Abingdon — strong academics, partnership with Abingdon School.
St Helen and St Katharine sits in Abingdon, six miles south of Oxford, but draws heavily from Oxford families and is firmly part of the Oxford schools ecosystem. It's a day school for girls aged 9-18, and its academic results are consistently excellent — often outperforming the Oxford city schools in league tables. The school has a calmer, less pressured feel than some of its competitors, partly because of the Abingdon setting and partly because of a deliberate culture of support alongside ambition.
What parents should know
Check the school's website for current fees. Entry is at 9+, 11+, and 16+, with the main intake at 11+. The school is selective but takes a slightly broader range of ability than MCS or Oxford High — and then adds significant value. The teaching is excellent, particularly in sciences, music, and English. The school's partnership with Abingdon School (the boys' school across town) means there are shared activities, drama productions, and social events, which addresses the single-sex school concern about limited social mixing.
The main drawback is location. If you live in North Oxford or Summertown, the school run to Abingdon is a commitment — 20-30 minutes each way in traffic. The school runs buses from Oxford, but it's still a factor. For families in South Oxford, Kennington, or the Abingdon area, it's ideal.
The reputation
SHSK (as everyone calls it) is perhaps the most underrated school in the Oxford orbit. It doesn't have the name recognition of Headington or Oxford High, but parents who know it rate it very highly. The culture is described as "kind and ambitious" — girls are pushed academically but not at the expense of their wellbeing. It's the school that parents who've looked at all the options often end up choosing, particularly if they value a slightly less pressured environment. The strong link with Abingdon School is a genuine plus for social development.
