Iffley & South Oxford

Village calm along the Thames — the Norman church, Iffley Lock, and the rowing clubs.

Iffley feels like a Cotswold village that happens to be a mile from Oxford city centre. The main attraction is St Mary's Church, one of the finest Norman churches in England, with elaborate Romanesque carvings from around 1170. The Thames Path runs through the area, passing Iffley Lock and the university rowing clubs.

What defines Iffley

St Mary's Church — Romanesque carvings of beakheads, zigzag moulding, and fantastical creatures. The west front is the highlight. Free to enter.

Iffley Lock — a picturesque Thames lock, perfect for watching narrowboats and rowers. The Thames Path connects here to the centre (north) or Sandford Lock (south).

The rowing clubs — Oxford's college rowing clubs line the riverbank between Folly Bridge and Iffley. During Eights Week (late May), this stretch of river becomes the stage for one of Oxford's great spectacles.

The feel

Peaceful. This is the antidote to central Oxford's crowds. Good for a walk along the river, a visit to the church, and not much else — which is the point.

Getting here

Walk south from Folly Bridge along the Thames Path (20 minutes from the centre) or take the 3 bus to Iffley Village.
