The Swan School

The Swan School is Oxford's newest secondary, opening in 2019 to address the chronic shortage of state school places in the city. It shares the Marston Ferry Road site with Cherwell School, which created some initial friction but has settled into a workable arrangement. The school was established as a free school and has attracted a large number of applications from families who couldn't get into Cherwell or wanted a smaller, newer alternative.

What parents should know

The Swan School is still building up — it hasn't yet had a full cohort through to GCSEs, so there are no exam results to judge it by. Early indications are positive: the school has a structured, disciplined approach and high expectations for behaviour and academic effort. It's smaller than Cherwell and aims to maintain that closer community feel as it grows. The facilities are purpose-built and modern, which is a pleasant change from some of Oxford's older school buildings.

The main uncertainty is simply that the school is new. Systems, traditions, and culture are still being established. There's no sixth form (students transfer at 16), which is a consideration if you want continuity. The admissions criteria favour local families, and the school has been oversubscribed since opening — a vote of confidence from parents who needed more secondary places in this part of Oxford.

The Swan is too new to have a settled reputation. Parents tend to view it either optimistically (new school, fresh approach, modern facilities) or cautiously (unproven, no track record, still growing). The fact that it's already oversubscribed suggests demand is strong. For families in the Marston Ferry Road area who miss out on Cherwell, The Swan is increasingly seen as a genuine alternative rather than a second choice. Give it a few years of GCSE results and the picture will become clearer.
