Freud
A former Jericho bar in a deconsecrated Greek Revival church — currently closed, with the building under new ownership.
Freud occupied the former St Paul's Church on Walton Street, and the building is striking. Massive Corinthian columns frame the entrance, and inside, the soaring nave was converted into a bar and performance space without losing its architectural grandeur. Stained glass windows filtered coloured light onto cocktail drinkers. It was dramatic without being kitsch.
The place was a Jericho institution since the 1980s, operating as a bar, cafe, and live music venue, with art exhibitions rotating on the walls. The cocktails were the main event — creative, well-made, and priced accordingly. The name appeared as "FREVD" in Roman capitals above the entrance.
What happened
Freud closed in 2025. In December 2025, the University of Oxford announced that the building had been purchased for use by the Blavatnik School of Government next door. The university said the building would be "brought back into a safe and usable condition" for the school and the wider community.
The building
The former St Paul's Church is a Grade II listed Greek Revival building, designed in 1836 by Henry Jones Underwood. Whatever happens next, the architecture alone makes it one of the most striking buildings in Jericho. The future use is not yet confirmed — watch this space.
