The Holywell Music Room opened on 7 July 1748 on a short stretch of Holywell Street between New College and the Bodleian. It is widely cited as the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Europe and the second-oldest in the world. The architect was Thomas Camplin, vice-principal of St Edmund Hall, who designed it as a subscription venture for the city's growing concert series.

The room seats around 200 under a flat coffered ceiling, with a small platform at the east end. The acoustic is dry and intimate — chamber music, song recital and solo keyboard work all sit clearly in the space. The building was Grade II* listed in 1954 and has been owned and managed by Wadham College since the nineteenth century.

What's on

The Music Room is in continuous use as a concert venue. Wadham's resident chamber series runs through term, with Coffee Concerts on Sunday mornings drawing a regular following from across the city, plus weekday lunchtime recitals and visiting ensembles. Tickets are usually a few pounds at the door for shorter recitals. The Faculty of Music uses the room for examined performances; touring chamber groups and early-music specialists hire it for its acoustic.

Visiting

The entrance is the plain Georgian doorway directly on Holywell Street — easy to walk past. There is no foyer to speak of: the front door opens almost straight into the hall. Arrive ten minutes before the start to claim a seat; the side benches fill last. The room is heated but layers help in winter. A short walk from Broad Street, the King's Arms on the corner makes the natural pre- or post-concert stop.
