Kellogg College

Oxford's part-time and continuing education hub — not a tourist destination

savings Good value
historic architecture modern

Kellogg is Oxford's largest college by student numbers, but you wouldn't know it from visiting — there's almost nothing to see here in the traditional sense. Founded in 1990 as the university's centre for part-time and continuing education, it occupies modern buildings on Banbury Road near the Woodstock Road junction. There are no ancient quads, no medieval chapel, no famous portraits. The college does important work in widening access to Oxford education, but it's not a visitor attraction.

If you're specifically interested in lifelong learning at Oxford, or you're attending an event at Kellogg, you'll find a friendly and unpretentious place. The college hosts the Centre for Creative Writing and the Institute of Population Ageing, both of which run public lectures. But if you're in Oxford for the day and want to see colleges, spend your time elsewhere.

What makes it special

Kellogg's significance is academic rather than architectural. It's the college that makes Oxford accessible to people who can't do a full-time residential degree — mature students, professionals, part-timers. That's a valuable mission, but it doesn't translate into things to look at. The common room is pleasant, the gardens modest.
