Pierre Victoire
Old-school French bistro on Little Clarendon Street — steak frites, carafes of wine, and no apologies.
Pierre Victoire is the kind of French bistro that barely exists anymore — chalkboard menus, checked tablecloths, carafes of house wine, and a kitchen that turns out steak frites, duck confit, and moules mariniere without irony or reinvention. It's been on Little Clarendon Street for decades, and it endures because sometimes you just want a proper French dinner without paying Brasserie Blanc prices.
The atmosphere is cramped, convivial, and very French. Tables are close together, the wine flows freely, and the noise level on a Friday night suggests everyone is having a good time. It won't win any awards for innovation, but that's not what it's for.
What to order
The steak frites is the benchmark — decent steak, proper thin fries, a simple sauce. The duck confit is reliably good. The prix fixe menu is excellent value, especially at lunch. The mussels are a safe bet when available. The house wine is cheap and perfectly drinkable — order it by the carafe.
Good to know
The prix fixe set menus offer good value — two courses at lunch for a very reasonable price. Little Clarendon Street is just off St Giles', within easy walking distance of the Ashmolean and Jericho. The space is small, so book ahead for dinner. Service can be a bit chaotic when busy. Cash tips appreciated.
