Free Things to Do in Oxford

Oxford is one of the best cities in England for free things to do — world-class museums, college grounds, riverside walks, and markets that don't cost a penny.

Museums (all free)

Oxford has four world-class museums, all completely free. This alone makes it one of the best day trips in England.

  • Ashmolean Museum — Britain's oldest public museum. Art from ancient Egypt to Picasso. The rooftop restaurant has good views.
  • Pitt Rivers Museum — Half a million objects from every culture on earth, packed into a Victorian cabinet of curiosities. Unlike anything else in the country.
  • Natural History Museum — Dinosaur skeletons, the world's most complete dodo remains, and a spectacular Gothic iron-and-glass hall. Best museum in Oxford for children.
  • Bodleian Library — The Divinity School is free to enter (the guided tours cost GBP 10+ but the free areas are impressive enough).

College grounds

Many colleges allow free access to their main quadrangles during certain hours. The best free college experiences:

  • Christ Church Meadow — the meadow behind Christ Church is free to walk through, no college admission needed. Classic Oxford skyline views.
  • University Parks — Oxford's main park, free and open daily. Walk along the Cherwell, watch cricket in summer.
  • Radcliffe Square — the square around the Radcliffe Camera is public and free. The most photographed spot in Oxford.

Walks

  • The Classic College Circuit — 90 minutes through the heart of the university. Free to walk the route; college admissions are optional.
  • Thames Path — follow the river south from Folly Bridge to Iffley Lock. Flat, scenic, free.
  • Port Meadow — ancient common land north of Jericho. Horses, wildflowers, and big skies. Free and always open.

Markets

  • The Covered Market — free to browse. Butchers, bakers, florists, and some of Oxford's best cheap eats (Alpha Bar falafel for under a fiver).

Practical notes

Oxford is very walkable — the city centre is compact enough to see everything on foot. Most museums close by 17:00. College visiting hours vary by term; check individual websites before visiting.
