Modern Art Oxford has been showing contemporary art since 1965, when it opened as the Museum of Modern Art. It sits on Pembroke Street, a quiet side road between St Ebbe's and the city centre, and operates as a non-collecting gallery — meaning every exhibition is temporary. The building is a converted brewery warehouse with high ceilings and raw industrial character.
What to see
The gallery runs three or four major exhibitions a year, typically featuring international contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, film, installation, and performance. Past shows have included work by Yoko Ono, Ai Weiwei, and Cornelia Parker. The upper gallery is the main exhibition space; the ground floor hosts smaller projects and often a video or sound installation. There is also a programme of talks, workshops, and late-night openings throughout the year.
Practical notes
Admission is free. The gallery is closed on Mondays. The bookshop stocks a good range of art publications and exhibition catalogues. There is a cafe on the ground floor. The building is fully accessible, with lift access to the upper gallery. Pembroke Street is a short walk from Westgate shopping centre and Christ Church.
