No. 1 Ship Street
Rooftop cocktails with a view of the Bodleian spires — Oxford's closest thing to a sky bar.
No. 1 Ship Street exists primarily because Oxford needed a rooftop bar and this building had a roof. The terrace looks out over the spires of the Bodleian Library and the surrounding colleges, and on a summer evening with a cocktail in hand, the view is the draw. The restaurant downstairs serves modern British food that's competent if secondary to the setting — the real draw is upstairs.
To be fair, the food has improved over the years. The menu takes itself seriously enough, with seasonal British dishes and a decent brunch offering. But let's be honest: you're here for the view and the cocktails, and both deliver.
What to order
On the roof: cocktails. The seasonal specials are usually inventive. Downstairs: the brunch is the strongest meal — eggs royale, pancake stacks, and good coffee. The dinner menu is fine but not destination-worthy on its own. The sharing boards work well as roof-terrace accompaniments.
Good to know
The rooftop terrace is weather-dependent and seasonal — check before making it your plan. It gets packed on sunny evenings, especially in summer. Book if you can, or arrive early. Ship Street is a tiny lane off Cornmarket, right in the city centre. Prices reflect the location and the view — not cheap, but the setting justifies it for a special occasion.
