Society Cafe takes its coffee seriously in a way that manages to be inviting rather than intimidating. The beans are sourced from top UK roasters, the baristas are properly trained, and the result is coffee that's consistently excellent — whether you're ordering a quick espresso or settling in for a pour-over. The St Michael's Street location is airy and well-designed, with enough seating to make it a genuine hang-out rather than a grab-and-go.

What separates Society from Oxford's other coffee shops is the combination of quality and atmosphere. The specialty coffee scene can be cold and clinical; Society is warm, friendly, and welcoming to everyone from coffee obsessives to people who just want a nice latte.

What to order

The pour-over coffee is outstanding and the baristas can talk you through the options without being condescending. The flat white is exemplary. The pastries are sourced from excellent bakeries and are always fresh. The brunch menu is compact but well-executed — the sourdough toast with toppings is simple and good.

Good to know

Busy during term time, especially mid-morning. The St Michael's Street location is central — just off Cornmarket, near the Oxford Union. Laptop-friendly with good wifi, making it a solid work spot. Card payments preferred. They also have a location in Bath if you find yourself there.
