Sasi's Thai
No-frills Thai cooking on the Cowley Road — big flavours, tiny prices, zero pretension.
Sasi's Thai is the Thai restaurant that students tell each other about in hushed, proprietary tones, as if sharing a secret that's been open to the public for years. The food is honest, unpretentious Thai cooking — curries, stir-fries, noodle dishes — prepared with fresh ingredients and genuine skill. The prices are notably low for the quality, which explains why it's perpetually busy.
You also know Sasi's from the Covered Market stall, which has been feeding Oxford at lunchtime for years. The Cowley Road restaurant is the sit-down version, with a fuller menu and the same kitchen ethos: cook it properly, price it fairly, and let the food speak for itself.
What to order
The green curry is fragrant and has real depth. The pad Thai is properly executed — not too sweet, good wok hei. The tom yum soup is fiery and restorative. The specials board is always worth checking. Portions are generous for the price.
Good to know
Check payment methods before visiting. The restaurant is small and doesn't take reservations, so queues at peak times are normal. Takeaway is a good option if you don't want to wait. The Cowley Road location means there are plenty of pubs nearby for a pre-dinner drink while you wait. Closed Mondays.
