The Coconut Tree arrived in Oxford as part of a small chain, and sceptics assumed it would be another formulaic concept restaurant. They were wrong. The Sri Lankan street food here is punchy, aromatic, and properly spicy — properly spiced, with real chilli heat that builds and lingers. The tapas-style format means you order a spread and share, which is the right way to eat this food.

The vibe is casual and loud. Painted walls, communal tables, Sri Lankan pop on the speakers. It's not a place for a quiet conversation, but it is a place for an excellent, affordable dinner with friends.

What to order

The devilled prawns are a standout — sweet, sour, and fiery. The lamb kottu roti is comfort food elevated. The string hoppers with curry are delicate and fragrant. Order the pol sambol (coconut relish) on the side with everything. Portions are tapas-sized, so budget for three or four dishes per person.

Good to know

The spice levels are genuine — if you order something marked hot, believe them. Walk-ins are usually fine at lunch but book for dinner, especially weekends. The St Clement's location is a five-minute walk from Magdalen Bridge. Good cocktail list with a Sri Lankan twist — the arrack-based drinks are worth trying.
