Barefoot Kitchen
Entirely plant-based street food — bold flavours drawn from global traditions.
Barefoot Kitchen proves that vegan food doesn't need to apologise for itself. The menu is entirely plant-based, drawing on global street food traditions to create dishes that are bold, satisfying, and flavourful enough that the absence of meat is beside the point. This isn't the worthy-but-dull veganism of old. It's punchy cooking that happens to not contain any animal products.
The setup is casual and unpretentious — closer to street food than sit-down restaurant. But the cooking has a care and creativity that elevates it well beyond the usual food-stall offering. Oxford's vegan scene has improved enormously in recent years, and Barefoot Kitchen is one of the reasons why.
What to order
The loaded fries are the standout — pick a topping and prepare to be overwhelmed. The burgers are substantial and well-constructed, with patties that have actual texture and flavour. The wraps are generous. Everything is clearly labelled for allergens at time of writing — check with staff for current allergen information. The specials rotate and are always worth checking.
Good to know
The location is slightly out of the way — not quite Cowley Road proper but accessible by bus or bike. Seating is limited, so takeaway is common. Closed Sunday and Monday. Follow their social media for specials and pop-up locations. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity.
