South Oxford parkrun (Hinksey Park)

South Oxford's neighbourhood parkrun — compact, friendly, and close to the city centre.

The South Oxford parkrun at Hinksey Park is the southernmost of Oxford's parkruns, tucked into the green space between Abingdon Road and the Thames. It's smaller and more intimate than Cutteslowe — fewer runners, a tighter community, and a course that stays entirely within the park and its surroundings. The other two Oxford 5km options are University Parks in the centre and Shotover on the city's eastern hill.

The course is flat and fairly fast, with a multi-lap format that keeps the field bunched on the second loops. The park itself has a pool, tennis courts, and a playground; it's a tighter, more contained venue than the open expanse at Cutteslowe or the woodland trails at Shotover, and that's the appeal for many runners — short walk in, familiar surface, friendly field.

The route

Start: Near the Hinksey Park playground on Lake Street

The course is a multi-lap route around the park and along the adjacent paths. It's flat throughout, on a mix of tarmac paths and firm grass. The laps are short, which means the field spreads out quickly and you'll find your own space.

The route takes you past the outdoor pool (Hinksey Heated Pool, open in summer — worth knowing about separately), around the perimeter of the park, and back. It's well-marshalled and clearly marked.

This is the neighbourhood parkrun. It suits south Oxford residents, students living near Folly Bridge, and anyone who prefers a smaller, quieter event close to the centre. The location makes it easy to combine with brunch at one of the Cowley Road cafes afterwards.
