Shotover parkrun

Oxford's toughest parkrun — hills, mud, trails, and the best views in the city.

Shotover is the parkrun that separates runners from joggers. Set in Shotover Country Park on the hill east of Oxford, this is a proper trail run with serious elevation, tree roots, mud, and views that make you forget you're in a city. If Cutteslowe is where you go for a PB, Shotover is where you go for a workout.

Don't compare your Shotover time to your Cutteslowe time. You will be slower. Everyone is slower. The course climbs hard in the first mile, throws you along rutted woodland tracks, and demands concentration on the descents. In winter, sections turn to genuine mud — ankle-deep in places after sustained rain. In summer, it's one of the most beautiful 5km runs you'll find anywhere.

The route

Start: Near the main car park, Old Road entrance off the A40

The course loops through the country park on a mixture of woodland trails, gravel tracks, and open grassland paths. The defining feature is the hill — you climb from the car park level up through the woods, gaining meaningful elevation in the first kilometre.

Once at the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views across Oxford — the dreaming spires are genuinely visible below you, laid out across the Thames valley. The route then winds through ancient woodland, over uneven ground and tree roots, before descending back to the finish.

The surface varies dramatically by season. Summer: firm trails, dry grass, fast descents. Winter: thick mud, standing water, careful footing on every root and stone.

Practical info

  • When: Every Saturday, 9:00am. Arrive by 8:45.
  • Registration: Free — register at parkrun.org and bring your barcode.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Parking: Free car park off Old Road, accessed from the Headington roundabout end. Fills up by 8:50 on busy weeks.
  • Terrain: Woodland trails, grass, gravel, mud. Trail shoes strongly recommended October-March. Road shoes will work in dry summer conditions but you'll slip on descents.
  • Average runners: 150-250 per week.
  • Toilets: Portable toilets at the car park.
  • Mud warning: This is not a euphemism. After rain, parts of the course are properly muddy. Wear shoes you don't mind getting filthy, and bring a change for the car.

Who it's for

Experienced runners who want a challenge. Trail runners who are sick of flat loops. Anyone who finds Cutteslowe too easy or too crowded. The Shotover community is slightly hardier than the other Oxford parkruns — the kind of people who think mud is a feature, not a bug. If you're new to parkrun, start at Cutteslowe and come here once you've got a few under your belt. If you're already a runner, this is the Oxford parkrun you'll keep coming back to.
