Shotover parkrun
Oxford's toughest parkrun — hills, mud, trails, and the best views in the city.
Shotover is the trail option among Oxford's parkruns. Set in Shotover Country Park on the hill east of the city, the course has serious elevation, tree roots, mud after rain, and panoramic views back across Oxford. If Cutteslowe and University Parks are where you go for a fast 5km, Shotover is where you go for a workout.
Times here are slower than on the flat courses. The route climbs hard in the first mile, runs along rutted woodland tracks, and demands concentration on the descents. In winter, sections turn to genuine mud — ankle-deep in places after sustained rain. In summer, the trails are firm and the views down to the dreaming spires are striking.
The route
Start: Near the main car park, Old Road entrance off the A40
The course loops through the country park on a mixture of woodland trails, gravel tracks, and open grassland paths. The defining feature is the hill — you climb from the car park level up through the woods, gaining meaningful elevation in the first kilometre.
Once at the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views across Oxford — the dreaming spires are genuinely visible below you, laid out across the Thames valley. The route then winds through ancient woodland, over uneven ground and tree roots, before descending back to the finish.
The surface varies dramatically by season. Summer: firm trails, dry grass, fast descents. Winter: thick mud, standing water, careful footing on every root and stone.

Who it's for
Trail runners and anyone after a hill-and-mud workout rather than a flat 5km. The Shotover field is a touch hardier than the other Oxford parkruns — many regulars treat mud as a feature, not a bug. First-time parkrunners often start at one of the flatter venues — Cutteslowe, University Parks, or Hinksey — and come to Shotover once they have a few under their belt.
