Activate Learning (City of Oxford College)

Oxford's FE college — vocational courses, apprenticeships, and practical skills training.

The City of Oxford College, now part of the Activate Learning group, is Oxford's further education college. It sits on Oxpens Road near the Westgate Centre, in a central location that makes it easily accessible from across the city. The college offers a wide range of vocational and academic courses — A-levels, BTECs, T-levels, apprenticeships, and adult learning. It's the main post-16 destination for Oxford students who don't go to a school sixth form.

What parents should know

The college serves a fundamentally different purpose from school sixth forms. If your teenager knows they want to study something practical — construction, catering, hair and beauty, motor vehicle, health and social care — this is where they should be. The facilities for vocational subjects are industry-standard, and the apprenticeship pathways link directly to local employers. The college also offers A-levels, though students aiming for competitive university courses may find a school sixth form better suited.

The Activate Learning merger has brought investment and a wider network of resources. The college excels at what FE does uniquely well: practical skills, employer partnerships, and giving students a fresh start in a more adult environment where they can develop at their own pace.

The reputation

FE colleges generally get less attention than they deserve, and City of Oxford College is no exception. It's not glamorous and won't feature in league tables alongside MCS or Cherwell, but it serves a vital role in Oxford's education system. For students who are practically minded, who want to earn while they learn, or who need a different environment from school, the college provides genuine opportunity. Parents of academically-oriented students rarely consider it; parents of practically-oriented students often find it's exactly what their teenager needs.
