St Anne's College

A modernist campus college with a strong access ethos — not a sightseeing stop

historic architecture modern

St Anne's started life in 1879 as the Society of Oxford Home-Students — women who studied at Oxford but couldn't afford (or weren't allowed) to live in one of the women's halls. That scrappy, egalitarian origin still defines the college. It didn't get full college status until 1959, and its buildings, mostly dating from the 1960s and later, reflect a deliberate rejection of the dreaming-spires aesthetic. This is a campus college, not a postcard college. The architecture is functional modernist with some decent later additions, set on a large site between Woodstock Road and the University Parks.

For a visitor looking for the Oxford experience of ancient quads and cloisters, St Anne's will disappoint. But it's one of the largest colleges (about 650 students), with a genuine commitment to access and widening participation that makes it important to the modern university. The Ruth Deech Building and the library are competent modern architecture. Tia Sheringham and Danny Alexander are among the more notable alumni.

What makes it special

St Anne's matters for what it represents rather than what it looks like. The founding mission — making Oxford affordable and accessible to women of all backgrounds — was radical in 1879 and remains relevant. The college's location next to the University Parks is its best physical asset. The Hartland Library (by Architects Design Partnership) is a decent mid-century building worth noting if you're interested in modernist Oxford.

Visitor info

St Anne's is on Woodstock Road, about 10 minutes' walk from the centre. There are no regular visitor hours and nothing particular to see from a tourism perspective. The college website lists public lectures and events. If you're in the area, the University Parks next door are the real attraction — free, beautiful, and open daily.
