The Market Cellar Door
Wine-focused bottle shop and tasting bar in the Covered Market — a joint venture between Eynsham Cellars and the adjacent Teardrop Bar, with around 250 bottles and six wines on tap.
The Market Cellar Door opened in February 2020 as a joint venture between Eynsham Cellars — the independent wine merchant founded in March 2010 by Iain and Oli, run from Witney and Eynsham — and Teardrop Bar, the drinks bar immediately next door in the Covered Market. It is the market's first dedicated wine bar and bottle shop, tucked into the corner near Bonners Fruit & Veg between Teardrop and Sartorelli's Pizza.
The range runs to around 250 wines by the bottle to drink in or take away, with six wines on tap to drink in or refill. The selection leans on small producers and minimal-intervention wines, with English bottles represented alongside the European core. The room is laid out as a working merchant's shop — pallets of cases on the floor, a long shelved wall organised by region, a hand-chalked recommendation board, and a stool-and-barrel tasting corner. Evening wine-tasting events are a recurring fixture; during summer the shop opens late Thursday to Saturday alongside Teardrop, with flights of beer or wine on offer across both units.
The intended routine is to bring food in from neighbouring market traders — a loaf from Hamblin Bread, a piece from The Oxford Cheese Company, something from the cured-meat counters — and put it together with a bottle at the barrel. The right stop in the market for a bottle for dinner, a gift to take to a friend's, or a glass with whatever you have just picked up two doors down.
