Japanese Sushi Covered Market Independent

Sushi Bowl opened in the Covered Market in May 2024, run as a family business by Yaning Xiao and her husband — a deliberate independent counter sitting alongside, not part of, the High Street chain sushi trade. Yaning grew up in China, has cooked across several Asian cuisines, and learned sushi from an experienced Japanese chef during years working in Japanese and Asian restaurants. The format is nigiri sets, sashimi platters, sushi rolls, salmon poke bowls, gyoza, katsu curry and mochi ice cream, with vegetarian options.

The unit is a small corner stall next to the fruit stand and Sartorelli's, with a chilled cabinet at the front and a few small tables outside. Salmon comes from a sea farm in Scotland, tuna from the Pacific. On opening week, the Cherwell review put a salmon-avocado poke bowl at around £10 and explicitly distinguished Sushi Bowl from Wasabi and Itsu.

Pair with a coffee from Brothers or a pastry from Hamblin Bread for a quick lunch that holds its own against the chain alternatives a few streets away.
